Statement of Commitment to Child Safety

At Disability, Mobility & Services (DMS), we are committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where children and young people, particularly those with disabilities, feel valued, heard, and protected. We recognise that children with disabilities can experience additional vulnerabilities and are dedicated to ensuring their safety and wellbeing in all aspects of our work.

Our organisation has a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse, neglect, or any form of misconduct that compromises a child’s safety. We actively work to prevent harm, empower children and young people, and respond swiftly and appropriately to any concerns raised.

OUR COMMITMENT TO CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

We are dedicated to:

  • Providing a safe and supportive environment where children and young people can fully participate without fear of harm or discrimination.
  • Ensuring that children and young people are aware of their rights, including the right to speak up and be heard when they feel unsafe.
  • Empowering children and young people by actively seeking their opinions and including them in decision-making about their safety and wellbeing.
  • Protecting children from abuse, neglect, grooming, and exploitation by implementing clear policies and procedures that outline safe behaviours and interactions.
  • Providing accessible ways for children to raise concerns, ensuring that communication methods accommodate diverse.

OUR COMMITMENT TO PARENTS, CARERS, FAMILIES AND THE COMMUNITY

We understand that child safety is a shared responsibility. To support this, we will:

  • Maintain open and transparent communication with families and carers regarding child safety matters.
  • Provide families with clear information on our child safe policies, including how they can report concerns or seek support.
  • Actively involve families and community members in the ongoing review and improvement of our child safety practices.
  • Respect and support the cultural safety of all children, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and LGBTQIA+ young people.
  • Work collaboratively with external agencies, regulatory bodies, and support services to ensure the highest level of child protection and safety.

OUR COMMITMENT AS AN ORGANISATION

At Disability, Mobility & Services (DMS), we take our responsibility to keep children safe seriously. To ensure we meet this commitment, we will:

  • Screen, train, and support all staff and volunteers to uphold child safety, including thorough Working with Children Checks (WWCC), reference checks, and regular training on child safety principles.
  • Implement and enforce a robust Child Safe Code of Conduct that defines appropriate and inappropriate behaviours when interacting with children.
  • Maintain clear and accessible reporting mechanisms for any breaches of child safety, ensuring that children, families, and staff feel safe and supported in raising concerns.
  • Ensure all allegations and safety concerns are treated seriously and responded to promptly, fairly, and in accordance with legal obligations.
  • Create safe physical and online environments that minimise opportunities for misconduct or abuse to occur.
  • Regularly review and improve our child safe policies and procedures to ensure they remain effective, relevant, and aligned with best practices.
